The Wrecks Press Conference INSIDE:

BY ORA HEARD

The LA-based indie rock band, The Wrecks, are gearing up to release INSIDE :, the first half of their highly anticipated two-part record, on April 11. Known for their upbeat sound and deeply felt lyrics, the band’s latest project delves deep into themes of mental health, isolation, and creative struggle. The introspective album explores lead singer Nick Anderson’s personal journey, reflecting a period of intense self-realization and vulnerability after the release of their 2022 album Sonder. In a press conference hosted by °1824, Anderson admitted that he found himself in a creative rut, feeling disconnected from his ideas.

“I was writing inside and outside at the same time, which was maybe an internal struggle of coming to terms with the fact that I was going through something and isolating myself, trying too hard to keep my head down instead of getting outside and experiencing the world.”

“I had so many songs that were coming from different points of view and they were contradicting and they weren’t being honest with how I was feeling. So if songwriting was this way for me to make sense of what I was experiencing mentally, then I was confusing myself.”

However, this struggle led to a renewed drive to create, resulting in INSIDE :, an album fueled by raw, honest expression. Anderson shared that his writing process is deeply personal, aiming to create music that resonates with his own experiences rather than trying to cater to outside expectations. "I’m just making the thing that I’m feeling, as honestly from my point of view as I can," he explained, emphasizing that genuine connection with his audience comes from this authenticity. This approach has allowed fans to connect on a profound level, validating the band's efforts despite the struggles behind the creation process.

This project features a range of visual elements, including music videos and visualizers for the singles Always, Everytime and Speed. Anderson shared that these visuals play a crucial role in conveying the story of the album. The music video for Speed particularly explores the theme of self-isolation, with the room slowly filling with foliage, symbolizing nature breaking through the walls. Anderson explained, “It’s about being locked away so long the outside world starts growing in through the cracks of the walls because mother nature is trying to set the score even.”

The release of INSIDE : marks only the beginning of the band’s plans for 2025. Following its debut, The Wrecks will embark on the INSIDE : OUTSIDE tour starting April 18 in Berkeley, California. Fans can expect an intimate, fan-focused live experience where the band embraces spontaneity and connection. Anderson and his bandmates—Aaron Kelley, Nick Schmidt, and Billy Nally—are especially excited to interact with fans, even involving their community of Wreckommenders in setlist decisions. Anderson reflected on the importance of creating a live show that feels real and present, preferring minimal stage production to maintain an authentic connection with the audience.

With INSIDE : dropping in just a few days and the tour quickly approaching, The Wrecks are set to share their most personal project yet, as they continue to carve their own path in the indie rock scene. The release date for the second half of the album, OUTSIDE, is yet to be announced, but fans can look forward to the continued exploration of these intimate themes in the coming months.
