“Clementine,” Ruby Rose Turner’s new pop hit, is bubbly perfection that cements her status as one of our new favorite pop girls. Turner describes “Clementine” as being about the realization that the man you’re captivated by has layers and they’re… not great. The core of its success is largely due to its relatability; who hasn’t fallen in love with a guy only to get to know him and realize he kind of sucks? As the chorus says, “he’s rotten inside!” Turner channels these feelings of disappointment and disgust in a way we all wish we could- by directly calling him out in an incredibly catchy song.
While it’s not a love song by any means, it has an effortlessly fun effect. When talking about her writing process, Turner said “I wanted it to feel cheeky and sarcastic rather than bitter.” She succeeded, and one could say the resulting track is sweet (like a clementine!)
Turner is no stranger to the spotlight, having been acting since 7 years old. “Clementine,” however, marks the next step in her journey to becoming a main pop act. As her major label debut following her recent signing with Atlantic Records, “Clementine” picks up where her previously released single “Vanity” left off, paving the way for the eventual release of her debut project. If the quality of Clementine is any indication, Ruby Rose Turner is an up and coming pop rock act to watch!
